Q. What is an Apprenticeship?

A. Apprenticeships are the entry point into the building and construction industry. When undertaking an apprentice you are able to learn a trade from a skilled employer. Apprenticeships are the process to receive qualification in various fields, such as; trade work, trade subcontractors, licensed builders or other building and construction industry professionals.

Q. Would I have to complete a pre-apprenticeship to begin an apprenticeship?

A. No. Some employers do prefer you to have completed a pre-apprenticeship, although if you do choose to do a pre-apprenticeship it may reduce the length of your apprenticeship.

Q. What age do I have to be to begin an apprenticeship?

A. To begin an apprenticeship, by law, you have to be 15 years and 9 months old.

Q. How does The Master Builders Association assist with apprenticeships?

A. Master Builders will assist an apprentice to locate a job opportunity with one of their existing MBA members.

Q. What will my salary be as an apprentice?

Q. How much training and schooling is there to complete an apprenticeship?

A. On average, you will have to attend 24 weeks over the period of your apprenticeship, if you have completed a pre apprenticeship, your training will be reduced.

Q. Is it necessary to have completed my VCE before beginning an apprenticeship?

A. No. It is not compulsory to have your VCE certificate, although most employers usually prefer it.

Q. How long would it take to complete my apprenticeship?

A. The length of time it will take to complete your apprenticeship will vary depending on which trade you choose to do. Most Apprenticeships take 4 years, other trades; such as bricklaying will take 3 years to complete.

Q. Will I need my driver’s license to begin an apprenticeship?

A. It is not compulsory to have your license as an apprentice, although some employers may prefer it, depending on which trade you would like to enter.

Q. Are there many opportunities for mature-aged apprentices?

A. There are opportunities available for mature aged apprentices in various trades.
